End the occupation of Iraq
Iraq has been the next target in the war on terror. Diplomacy, like it was ever going to stop America and Britain failed. As I write this US and British troops are occupying Iraq, craving the country up into exploration zones for various oil companies and watching as people loot museums and destroy what is left of a once prosperous nation. The situation in Baghdad is now so bad that people are afraid go outdoors. So far no chemical or biological weapons have been found. Now Blair faces questions from within his government as Donald Rumsfield admits that weapons of mass destruction may never be found in Iraq and it is possible that they were destroyed before the invasion began. We also see the so called liberated people starting to rise up against the occupying American forces and being met with bullets and brutality by American troops. 16 Iraqi civilians have been killed since Bush declared the war over on May 1st. Iraq for the Iraqi people not for American profit.
Now that the main part of war is over we should remember that we here in Ireland did our bit by letting US planes are still land at Shannon airport. The blood of Iraqi children is on our leaders hands. We must not let them forget this fact. The Nice treaty we were told would guarantee our neutrality, BULLSHIT!!!! But we need to pose this question to our politicians about Nice and about their lies on the use of Shannon. Mary Kelly and the five catholic workers who face trial for their actions in disarming US planes at Shannon need to be supported. Their trials, (though Mary's will probably be over by the time you read this) are the perfect platform here to put the war on trial. The real criminals here are our government. The invasion of Iraq was against all international laws, yet our government still allows US planes to land here for a couple of million US dollars. Is that what the lives of Iraqi children is worth????? On July 4th America celebrates its independence from the British empire, yet now ironic though it maybe it seeks to build its own empire, every bit as cruel and oppressive as the British one was across the globe. Protest against the occupation of Iraq and Palestine at the US ambassadors residence in the Phoenix Park at 6m on Friday July 4th. Also join the day of celebration of US counter culture on Saturday the 5th in Isaac Butts on Store St. from 1pm till seven pm.
